About North Ledger
Built for small businesses that outgrew
doing it themselves.
North Ledger was founded in Toronto with a single thesis: ambitious small business owners deserve Bay Street–quality bookkeeping without the Bay Street price tag or overhead.
We're a remote-first firm serving clients across Canada and the United States — from solo consultants reconciling one account to multi-entity operators navigating cross-border complexity.
Our Story
Why we started, and why it still matters.

Most small business owners start doing their own books because they have to. They track expenses in a spreadsheet, reconcile the bank once a quarter, and hand a shoebox to their CPA every April. It works — until it doesn't.
We saw this pattern repeatedly: the moment a business hit meaningful revenue, the founder's books became a liability rather than an asset. Poor categorization meant bad margins data. Unreconciled accounts meant surprise tax bills. Delayed closes meant decisions made on months-old numbers.
North Ledger was built to be the solution for that moment — when you're ready to run your business on real financial data, not guesswork. We took the rigour of institutional accounting and rebuilt it as a service model that actually makes sense for small businesses: flat monthly rates, month-to-month terms, direct bookkeeper access, and books delivered by the 15th.
Being Toronto-based and remote-first means we've always worked with businesses across time zones — from Ontario-based agencies to California-based SaaS companies with Canadian founders. Cross-border complexity isn't new to us; it's been part of the practice from the start.
"We wanted to build the bookkeeping firm we wished existed when we were running our own businesses — professional, reliable, and completely transparent about what things cost."
— The North Ledger Team, Toronto
The North Ledger Difference
Four things that set us apart from every other bookkeeper you've tried.
CPA-trained, not just QuickBooks-certified
Our team is trained to accounting standards — not just software certification. That means your chart of accounts, opening balances, and year-end package are built to hold up under CRA audit or IRS review.
Cross-border is our default, not a specialty add-on
Most bookkeepers treat cross-border complexity as a niche service. We built our entire workflow around it — USD/CAD reconciliation, GST/HST, and US sales tax nexus are standard operating procedure here.
Books closed by the 15th, every month
We hold ourselves to a delivery standard that most bookkeepers don't offer. You receive reconciled statements, a P&L, and your balance sheet within 15 days of each month's close.
You talk to your bookkeeper directly
No support queues, no junior account managers. When you email us, you get a response from the person who actually knows your books. We keep client teams small on purpose.
How We Work
What the engagement actually looks like.
Remote bookkeeping should feel effortless. Here's what happens between signing on and receiving your first clean month-end package.
Discovery & assessment
We review your current bookkeeping setup, chart of accounts, and software environment before proposing a plan. No guesswork, no upsell pressure.
Onboarding & setup
We configure your QuickBooks or Xero environment, connect bank feeds, reconcile your opening balances, and get your books clean from day one.
Monthly close cadence
Every month we reconcile accounts, categorize transactions, and deliver your full financial package by the 15th — with a brief summary of anything notable.
Year-end & CPA handoff
We prepare a complete, tax-ready year-end package and deliver it directly to your CPA — reducing their billable hours and your overall accounting cost.
Cross-Border Expertise
Fluent in both sides of the 49th parallel.
Operating across borders introduces complexity most bookkeepers aren't equipped for. CRA compliance, IRS readiness, multi-currency reconciliation, and state-by-state sales tax obligations are our core competency — not an afterthought.

Our Tech Stack
The tools behind your books.
We work in the platforms your business already uses, or help you migrate to the best fit. No proprietary portals, no lock-in.
Our Philosophy
What we believe about great bookkeeping.
Data without context is noise.
Most bookkeepers stop at categorization. We believe our job only begins there. We translate raw financial data into a clear narrative — one that helps you make better decisions, faster.
Quiet competence.
You hired us so you wouldn't have to think about bookkeeping. We aim to be the most invisible, reliable part of your operations. No constant pestering, no messy workflows — just pristine books delivered on time, every month.
Modern tools, traditional rigour.
We leverage the best cloud accounting software, AI-assisted categorization, and automated receipt capture. But technology never replaces rigorous manual review by trained professionals.
Your CPA is our partner, not our competitor.
We don't do tax filing — we make your CPA's job significantly easier. Clean, tax-ready books delivered to them at year-end typically cut their billable hours by 30–50%.
"We'd been through two bookkeepers before North Ledger. The difference was night and day — clean books, on time, every single month."
E-commerce founder, Toronto
"As a US company with Canadian employees, the cross-border complexity was giving us headaches. They handled everything — CRA, payroll remittances, all of it."
SaaS startup, San Francisco
"Our CPA told us our books were the cleanest they'd seen in years. That's the only review that matters."
